ISVD 06
chapter 6
âAre you all right, Milady?â
Teor asked, concern written on his face.
I pretended to be dizzy and replied,
âMy head is spinning.â
âLetâs get you into my carriage for now.â
âEek?!â
Before I could respond, Teor scooped me up in a bridal-style lift. I couldnât help but let out a strangled scream.
âAh⌠Iâm dizzyâŚâ
When he apologized, I wanted to say it was fine, but the situation was too embarrassing. So I simply rested my face against his chest, pretending to be dizzy.
And now⌠how could I explain using dark magic so openly in front of the Empireâs only dark-attribute user?
Not to mention I had used healing magic, which would certainly make him curious to probe my abilities.
Should I be honest about it?
Well, I am planning to demonstrate a purchased dark attribute at the upcoming debutante ball.
To do that, I need to decide who, when, and how will extract Teorâs dark attribute and store it in an object that I could use.
Of course, all of that is a lie. The nonexistent device will be âdestroyedâ immediately after the debutante ball to prevent anyone from misusing it.
The only important thing is that my debutante presentation doesnât become a laughingstock like in the original story.
So this is actually a pretty good opportunity.
I plan to use this power to make Perre unnieâs path smooth, so thereâs no reason to hide it anymore.
I could explain the situation to Teor, let him in on a little of my scheme, and in exchange, reveal a part of my secretâŚ
Lost in thought, I opened my eyesâand froze in shock at the mass of black hair filling my vision.
âAhâ!â
Oh! What a surprise!
I didnât know when Teor had brought me into the carriage and set me down on the soft cushions. Seeing him this close made my heart plummet.
But where exactly had he been looking?
Teor, noticing my suspicious glare, explained,
âI was looking at your hand.â
âMy hand?â
âYes. The one you healed with dark magic.â
âOhâŚâ
Apparently, he was very curious about the part where I healed myself using dark magic.
He even leaned close to someone pretending to be asleep just to examine my fingers.
I cursed silently. Damn it, Iâd been caught.
âUm⌠well, you seeâŚâ
I floundered, unsure how to explain. Then an idea struck me. I quickly said,
âItâs an experimental device!â
Teor raised an eyebrow.
âItâs a relic the academy is developing. Itâs meant to mimic dark attributes⌠anyway, itâs confidential, but my father has money, so⌠well, itâs a secret. Itâs illegal, I guess not?â
I babbled incoherently, and the look on Teorâs face changed from confusion to disbelief.
âOh, please just let this slideâŚâ
I muttered to myself, forcing a strained smile.
âSecret. Totally secret.â
âSecret, huh.â
Teor murmured to himself, nodding as if to affirm it.
Seeing this, he let a faint smirk cross his lips and narrowed his eyes.
âHow⌠interesting.â
âAh⌠hahaha. Yes, itâs interesting. But please, keep it a secret.â
His red eyes glinted like snakes.
âInterestingâŚâ
It wasnât a reassuring âI understand,â but rather an unsettling, chilling tone. Great. Just great.
I internally screamed, âInteresting my foot! Please just keep the secret!â
âAnyway, once itâs properly completed, Iâll use it at the debutante ball.â
Teor looked at me quizzically.
âIs that really necessary?â
âOf course! I have money, but no attribute abilities!â
Teor stared at me silently.
âIf I donât use something like this, Iâll be a laughingstock at the debutante ball. A commoner with no abilitiesâŚâ
âSo you want to at least make it appear you have abilities?â
âYes! This is the only way to avoid humiliation at the debutante ball.â
See? I buy my abilities with money.
Teor let out a small, incredulous laugh. I didnât show it, but it stung a little.
âBesides, this ability resembles the Empireâs only dark attribute. Imagine a lowly commoner suddenly using itâthe Empire would be in an uproar.â
âTheyâd blame the oracle.â
âExactly!â
I clapped my hands. Teorâs eyes widened in surprise.
âSo you canât reveal this power to the world.â
Originally, I intended to use it only when Perre unnie was in danger, claiming it was a divine gift.
âBut as you said, that âexperimental deviceââfake or realâis dangerous.â
I realized he didnât fully believe me, but there was nothing else I could do.
âItâs a secret, so no one knows about it anyway, right?â
âThatâs exactly the problem. Claiming to have created a device that doesnât exist will make people scramble to obtain it.â
He spoke as if he already knew I was lying. I presented a solution anyway.
âThen we just destroy it immediately after, problem solved?â
âThatâs easier said than done. Once people know it exists, theyâll go to any lengths to acquire it.â
I shrugged.
âBut it doesnât exist in reality.â
âThatâs irrelevant. Once people imagine it, some will try to find or even create it. Some might actually manage it.â
âYikes.â
âAnyway, think of another way.â
âHmmâŚâ
I frowned, unsure what other way could exist.
Teor paused, then shook his head and said,
âUsing that ability at the debutante ball will definitely cause a stir.â
âThen Iâll just claim itâs the experimental device with your dark attribute.â
I asked him to help me figure out how to borrow Teorâs dark attribute briefly so I could use it at the ball.
He didnât understand why I needed to do it.
No choice. Iâd have to explain the original story.
How terrible and frustrating Ellineaâs debutante ball had been.
Even invoking precognitive dreams, which I had never actually had.
âActually, I have precognitive dreams.â
âPrecognitive dreamsâŚ?â
âYes, they are so accurate itâs creepy. In the dream, my debutante ball was a disaster, so I refuse to repeat it.â
âNo lying about putting an attribute in a necklace. Even claiming such an object exists would throw the Empire into chaos.â
Teor shook his head firmly.
Even precognitive dreams werenât helping?
âWhy? Even if itâs commoners, all nobles have attributes.â
âNobles desire abilities they donât have.â
ââŚAh!â
I hadnât thought of that.
Each person has their own attribute, determining offensive and defensive roles. Many would want both, creating chaos.
âComplicated, huhâŚâ
I frowned at a point I hadnât considered.
âAnyway, think of another way.â
âHmmâŚâ
No matter how I think, no good solution comes to mind.
Teor, after a pause, slowly shook his head.
âUsing that ability at the debutante ball will shake the Empire.â
âSo we claim itâs an experimental device containing the dark attribute, not my actual power.â
He looked at me with an incredulous expression.
Was I foolish⌠or bold?
That thought was correct. He could read the mixture of fear and audacity in my eyes.
âFor now, that method wonât do.â
Without revealing his emotions, Teor continued.
âSo just come with me.â
âYes.â
I answered reflexively, then realized what he meant.
âYes?â
