HYCBV 31
Chapter 31
What is this? The line is kind of forceful in a strange way.
âSo coolâŠ!â
So this is what itâs like to have a boss who throws around envelopes of money so boldlyâso reliable and impressive!
I stared up at Kaien in a daze.
Noticing my gaze, Kaien smirked as if he understood.
âYou almost married a man you donât even love over such a small amount of money. Iâve heard going against your heart is quite painful.â
It wasnât that painful thoughâŠ?
I was just a little anxious about whether Iâd find a suitable contract marriage partner who matched my interests.
His words felt slightly off, but that wasnât important.
What mattered was that the person in front of me trusted me enough to give me a 100,000 gold bonus!
Filled with genuine respect and loyalty, I shouted enthusiastically:
âThanks to the bonus you gave me yesterday, my situation has improved so, so much! Thank you! Being able to work by your side is the greatest fortune of my life. From now on, I want to stay by your side forever and serve you for a long, long time!â
At the same time as expressing gratitude, I subtly slipped in my desire for lifelong employment.
But⊠was that too obvious?
For a moment, Kaienâs beautiful lips stiffened.
Then he suddenly turned his head away and coughed awkwardly.
âW-whatâŠÂ ahem. Thereâs no need to go that far. That amount is just pocket change to me.â
âŠIs he bragging about money all of a sudden?
It was random, but maybe this is what a 100,000 gold bonus does to your perception.
Even that side of him looks cool!
âAnyway. From now on. Focus even more. On your duties.â
Why does his voice and movement feel oddly stiff and broken?
Must be my imagination. I smiled brightly.
âYes! Iâll work hard!â
While I was immersed in my morning work, Aaron called me from outside the office.
âFor the afternoon tasks, just follow this order.â
âYes, thank you, senior.â
âOh, if you have any questions, ask now. Iâll be going out later and heading home directly.â
Then this is my only chance to talk to him today.
I quickly stopped him.
âUm, Senior Aaron.â
âYes? Ask anything.â
âWell⊠actually, I have a favor to ask.â
âWhat is it?â
âWould you⊠perhaps attend the graduation ball with me?â
Crash!
Something fell inside the office.
⊠⊠âŠ
A moment later.
Aaron stood in front of the desk with his hands politely clasped, cold sweat dripping down.
Kaien, who had been looking out the window, slowly turned toward him.
âAaron.â
âYes, Master.â
âWhat kind of trick were you trying to pull on the newcomer?â
âHe heard it after all!â
Kaienâs hearing was extraordinary. Not just thatâhis entire body, awakened by overwhelming mana, made all five senses inhumanly sharp.
If he hadnât heard it, there was no way the sound of something falling inside the office wouldâve occurred the moment Aaron was asked to be a partner.
And a few seconds later, Kaien wouldnât have called him in that icy voice.
âMiss Violet is someone Master personally stopped from getting married because he values her. I absolutely cannot be misunderstood as trying to flirt with her!â
Aaron recalled the bald man who had been crushed by Kaien after trying something similar.
To avoid that fate, Aaron desperately explained:
âYou heard what Miss Violet said, right? She said she didnât have anyone suitable and asked me despite the rudeness. Sometimes a workplace senior escorts someoneâit happens!â
A ladyâs escort didnât have to be a lover.
It could be a father, brother, relative, or even a superior.
âShe just didnât want to attend the graduation ball alone, since that would be embarrassing. Thatâs why she asked me.â
Aaron kept rambling nervously.
But Kaien wasnât really listening.
âShe asked him because she couldnât go alone⊠then whyâŠâ
Why didnât she ask me?
The question suddenly surfaced and wouldnât disappear.
âWell⊠a senior and a superior arenât the same.â
Maybe she didnât dare ask her boss and instead chose the more approachable Aaron.
That made sense.
And besides, attending some meaningless academy ball with fresh graduates⊠ridiculous.
He hated pointless social events.
But stillâŠ
âGoing alone to the graduation ball is embarrassing?â
âHuh? Ahâyes. Itâs considered your debut into society, so people care about those formalities. The capitalâs social scene is quite conservative.â
âHow trivial.â
Kaien scoffed at such shallow traditions.
Still, he knew that if one wanted to function in society, those rules had to be followed.
So⊠for the sake of his capable secretaryâs public image, just one dayâ
âItâs not like I canât make time.â
As her direct superior, providing that much âemployee benefitâ wasnât unreasonable.
Having justified himself, Kaien turned to Aaron.
âWhen is the graduation ball?â
âThe last day of this month.â
âMy schedule that day?â
Aaron quickly pulled out his notebook.
â9 AM: budget meeting with the Minister of Finance.
11 AM: meeting with the ambassador of the Kingdom of Laflia.
3 PM: military report and strategy briefing.
6 PM: imperial state banquet.â
âNothing important.â
âExcuse me?! Those are all criticalââ
âCancel them all.â
âW-what?! But⊠yes, sir!â
Under Kaienâs terrifying gaze, Aaron hurriedly nodded.
âThat ball thingâdoes it last overnight? Then clear my schedule the next morning too.â
âM-Master⊠donât tell meâŠâ
Aaron hesitated, then asked cautiously:
âYouâre not planning to attend as Miss Violetâs partner yourself, are you?â
âI am. Problem?â
Aaronâs eyes widened.
Yes. Thereâs a problem.
Wonât the newbie faintâŠ?
âWell⊠I do believe she truly respects you, but even so, having you as her partner might be too much pressure for herâŠâ
âWhat? Why?â
âWellâŠâ
Rumors about the Tower Master and his secretary were already spreading.
If they attended together, it would explode into a scandal.
âEven if she likes his face, this is different.â
For a young noble lady, especially, scandals were fatal.
And Freesia had always seemed modest.
Even today, she looked overwhelmed by attention.
There was an even bigger issue.
âIf you go together, everyone will assume you have a special relationship. Wouldnât that ruin her chances of marriage?â
âSo youâre saying sheâll never marry and just work here until she dies?â
ââŠYes?â
Kaien smirked.
âI like that. Proceed.â
Aaron stood there, mouth wide open.
He was always unreasonable, but when it came to Miss Violet, it was a different kind of unreasonable!
âAt least⊠you should ask for her opinion.â
âHer opinion? Of course sheâll say yes.â
Kaien raised an eyebrow confidently and smiled.
âShe already said she wants to stay by my side forever. Said meeting me was the greatest fortune of her life.â
He recalled what she had said earlier:
âBeing able to work by your side is the greatest fortune of my life. I want to stay by your side forever and serve you for a long time!â
Her eyes had sparkled with affection and admiration.
Almost dazzling.
ââŠ.â
For some reason, Kaien felt short of breath and tugged at his cravat.
