HYCBV 10
Chapter 10
âWhat?â
âWhat did you say?â
The wizards stared at Frisia in stunned disbelief.
âWhat did you restore? The data?â
âEven if the Duke is terrifying, thatâs quite the boast!â
The wizards, fussing and panicking, seemed pleasedâas if Frisiaâs boldness would somehow lessen their punishment.
âShut up.â
âUgh.â
âGulp.â
With a single word, Cayen silenced the wizards and gestured to Aaron.
âAaron, check it.â
âYes, sir.â
Aaron hurried over and placed a verification artifact on top of the thick pile of documents.
Whirrr.
The artifact vibrated as it activated.
Numbers began appearing on its surface.
-
-
-
3⌠the numbers started climbing rapidly.
-
-
ââŚ!â
Aaronâs eyes widened slowly.
A moment later, he shouted in disbelief,
âMy god. Itâs all restored!â
âReally?â
âHow⌠how is that possible? It looked hopeless!â
The wizards, expecting Frisia to fail, froze in shock.
One particularly skeptical wizard checked the artifact himselfâand turned pale.
âThis is insane. Itâs really 100%!â
The wizard pointed at Frisia with a face as pale as death.
âThis is impossible! Thereâs no way all of this could be restored overnight! What did you even do?!â
âQuiet, quiet!â
Aaron shouted at the wizards and turned to Frisia.
âMiss Violet, could you explain?â
âWait⌠Violet? Violet, you meanâŚâ
One wizard pointed at Frisia.
âCould it really be⌠the Cinderella âDespairâ story?â
Frisiaâs expression stiffened.
âAll she ever did was follow her impressive fiancĂŠ around, couldnât keep up with the academy, nearly failed every timeâa complete fool!â
âOh! I heard that rumor too. Duke, surely she must have tampered with the artifactâuubp!â
At that moment, Cayen grabbed the chattering wizardâs lips.
âUubp? Bbbp!â
The wizardâs lips stretched unnaturally, and he groaned in pain.
âStop squawking. Your noise is reverberating.â
âUbbpâŚ!â
The wizards immediately fell silent, shocked by the cruel display.
âWow⌠unbelievable!â
Even Frisiaâs eyes widenedâthough for a different reason than the other wizards.
âSo cool⌠one day, Iâll make sureâŚ!â
One day, Iâll twist Felixâs annoying mouth just like that!
Filled with determination, Frisia quickly pulled out her notebook and began taking notes.
Cayen glanced at her.
âNew recruit. Explain yourself.â
âAh, yes!â
Frisia hurriedly put away her notebook and spoke.
âI analyzed the surrounding data of the missing sections and fortunately noticed a consistent pattern. Using that, I was able to reverse-calculate the lost data.â
Her explanation was clear, even if she hesitated slightly.
âA⌠pattern?â
âWait, there was such a thing?â
The wizards exchanged confused glances. Such applied methods werenât in the textbooks they had memorized.
âThereâs no way that inferior student knows something we donât!â
In the strange silence, Cayen said nothing, remaining statue-like as he simply stared at Frisia.
After a moment,
âHuh.â
A faint curve appeared at the corner of Cayenâs mouth.
âImpressive.â
He slowly brushed his lips as he spoke.
âNot bad, new recruit.â
The wizardsâ eyes nearly popped out in shock.
âNot bad?! Not bad?!â
No wizard had ever earned such praise from Cayen before.
âWhy would he compliment a D-grade student like that?!â
As the wizards struggled in envy, a lazy smile spread across Cayenâs refined face.
âA person finally arrived at the magic tower whoâs mastered the Imperial language.â
ââŚ!â
Instantly, the wizardsâ faces turned redâthey didnât even know the language.
âWell done.â
ââŚ!â
Frisia blinked and hesitated, as if hearing the words for the first time in her life.
After a moment, she awkwardly responded,
âTh-thank youâŚ!â
The wizards glared at her, burning with jealousy.
One wizard had been friends with Felix at the academy, often sighing whenever his fiancĂŠe was mentioned.
âAh⌠my fiancĂŠe? Sheâs not stupid, but she loves to go out so her grades are terrible. Thatâs how girls are, right? They hang out, chat, and eat delicious food.â
And yet such a frivolous girl earned the Dukeâs recognition! Surely she must have used some trick they didnât know.
The wizard whose lips had been stretched like cheese glared at Frisia with envy.
At that moment, Cayen spoke again.
âThe new recruit should get some sleep first.â
Only then did Aaron notice she was wearing the same clothes as yesterday, her lips slightly chapped and complexion pale.
âShe stayed up all night here?â
Aaron nodded to Frisia.
âGo on home. Youâve worked very hard today.â
âIâll see you tomorrow at workâŚ!â
Frisia bowed politely to Cayen and left.
Cayen turned to the wizards.
âAnd you lot.â
His calm voice was almost gentle. The wizards slumped.
âSince youâre incompetent and jealous assistants, Iâll give you a special gift.â
A gift?
Though their hearts ached from the harsh words, the word âgiftâ still made them hopeful.
The wizards looked up at Cayen eagerly.
He smiled faintly.
âAn opportunity to return to your roots.â
ââŚHuh?â
âYesâŚ?â
âEveryone is demoted to janitorial duties. Start over by cleaning and scrubbing. Fun, right?â
No!
The wizards grimaced and protested desperately.
Cayenâs smile deepened.
âOf course, if you have skill, you can be promoted again. So do your best.â
He lightly tapped one wizard on the shoulder.
The wizards dropped to their knees in panic.
âD-Duke!â
âWe beg for another chance, please!â
They had lived arrogantly as tower wizards, and now being reduced to janitors was the ultimate humiliation.
Cayen waved dismissively, as if tired of listening.
Then the wizards were pulled away by an invisible force.
âD-Dukeeeee!â
âPlease give us a chanceeeee!â
Their pleas echoed into the distance.
Cayen, smiling faintly as he watched the scene, finally spoke.
âThe new recruitâs name was Frisia Violet, right?â
âYes, thatâs correct.â
Aaron nodded quickly.
Tap, tap.
Cayen tapped his desk silently for a moment.
With a serious expression, he finally spoke:
âInvestigate her background.â
I left the magic tower in a daze.
So many unexpected things had happened, leaving me confused.
But one phrase remained clear in my mind:
âWell done.â
It was the first time anyone had truly acknowledged me.
Just thinking about it made my heart race.
I wanted to feel that way again.
[My master is truly brilliant!]
Pipi, who had been silent, bounced excitedly in my pocket.
[All I did was the simple calculations! I admire your ingenuity, master!]
Hearing praise from Pipi made my face burn.
[Meanwhile, I was of no use, master.]
Pipiâs voice drooped.
[Today I was just a talking calculator. Youâre far too clever. I might be useless.]
âWhat are you talking about! You saved me so much time with your calculations!â
I mentally scolded her.
âBesides, thanks to you, I finally got back at Felix! Something I hadnât managed for years!â
[Really?]
Pipi peeked out of my pocket, her little black eyes looking up at me.
[Am I useful too?]
âOf course! Immensely so!â
Pipi brightened instantly.
[Iâll keep improving! Until master canât live without me!]
Seeing her energized in my pocket made me smile.
[But master, can you upload more data into me?]
âHuh?â
[I want to be more helpful. But honestly, my memory is empty right now.]
Apparently, most of the data inside Pipi had been lost during the explosion accident.
âHow can I feed data into you?â
[Everything you experience becomes my data! Reading books, checking papersâanything!]
âŚSo basically, sheâs telling me to study.
[Iâll learn diligently so one day I can unblock masterâs mana channels!]
I paused.
âShe knows everything I remember.â
Apparently, she had read my memories from childhoodâbefore my parents died, I was considered a magical prodigy.
