HYCBV 23
Chapter 23
âIs this rigged? Her grades are⌠what!â
If sheâs the Mage Tower Masterâs secretary, sheâd be one of the most successful among her graduating classmates.
Throughout school, Freesia had quietly boosted everyoneâs confidence by handling the âsheâs better than meâ comparisons. There was no way she had suddenly outdone everyone and achieved such a position.
No one could easily admit it.
Lorena also widened her eyes.
âFreesia became the Duke of Kreutzâs secretary? Thatâs impossible.â
With those grades, thereâs no way she could immediately land such an elite job. Even if she was boastful, this was extreme.
Even if it was shameful to admit the truthâthat she was a graduate with no jobâhow could she fabricate such a lie?
The man across from Freesia, momentarily stunned by her position, then revealed his own credentials.
[âWell, your job is pretty impressiveâŚ? Ahem, allow me to introduce myself.â]
âThree trading ships and two emerald mines? Wow, he must be rich.â
âWell, that tree is definitely out of Freesiaâs reach. But that guyâheâs like winning the lottery for her.â
Everyone supported the potential match between Freesia and the balding man.
âSo, Freesia will attend the graduation ball holding that manâs hand?â
Lorena imagined herself, dressed beautifully beside Felix, and Freesia standing there with that bald, pot-bellied man. She felt a pang of sorrow.
âYou were once a bright, cheerful child, talented in magicâŚâ
And now, somehow, our roles have reversed.
ââŚAh, good.â
A thrill ran from her head to toe at the thought that their positions had completely flipped. Her flat stomach seemed to flutter slightly. Perhaps the baby was reacting to her motherâs happiness.
[âUh! Who are you?â]
Suddenly, a commotion erupted in the video orb, which had been showing the tedious introductions.
[âYou shouldnât be entering here!â]
Lorena instinctively looked, eyes wide.
ââŚHuh?â
A man walked into the frame.
Long limbs, broad shoulders, and features so striking that the orbâs blurry image couldnât do him justice. He looked entirely different from the other participants.
Lorenaâs mouth fell open.
âWho⌠is he?â
Was there really someone like that in this country?
She wasnât the only one thinking that.
âWhoâs that man?â
âWow, look at those legsâŚâ
âThe orbâs quality is awful! So frustrating!â
Some viewers leaned so close they seemed about to press their noses to the screen.
âEven with bad resolution, his beauty comes through. How has he never found a match?â
âNonsense. With just a wave of his hand, he could fill a hundred wivesâ spots!â
âBut who is he? Does anyone know his name?â
âNo one seems to know. Maybe heâs just a commoner?â
âDoesnât matter. With that face, Iâll take care of him!â
Dottyâs eyes widened.
âHuh? âŚThe Duke?â
âWhat?â
There was only one ducal family in this countryâthe Kreutz Dukes.
Those briefly shocked soon scoffed.
âWhat nonsense? Why would the Duke waste time on someone like her?â
âI swear I saw him from afar before. That has to be the Duke!â
âAre you sure itâs not someone else?â
âHow could you mistake that face?â
âTrue⌠I guess.â
Everyone seemed to agree with Dottyâs observation.
Meanwhile, the man in the orb strode forward and seated himself firmly⌠in front of Freesia Violet.
âWhatâs going on?â
âWhy is the Duke in front of FreesiaâŚ? Could he have discovered sheâs faking being the Mage Tower Masterâs secretary?â
Freesiaâs eyes widened behind her glasses.
Finally, a conversation began between the two.
âWhatâs happening?â
âWhat are they talking about? It doesnât seem hostileâŚâ
Everyone perked up, focusing on the orb.
Crackle!
At that moment, interference began on the screen.
âWhat?! Suddenly!â
âAh, I canât hear anything!â
Everyone clamored, curious about their conversation.
Lorena, pale, glared at the orb.
âThis is impossible. Why would the Duke of Kreutz even show up at such a low-level eventâŚâ
And why, among all these women, would he be talking to Freesia for so long?
ââŚItâs probably nothing. Just a brief incident.â
Freesia couldnât possibly get involved with such a high-ranking figure.
Even as she tried to convince herself, Lorenaâs eyes stayed glued to the orb. Her hand pressed lightly on her flat stomach.
âThis man is completely outrageous.â
The first conversation with the bald man had been nearly torturous.
I listened with lifeless eyes, like a rotten fish, to his incessant chatter.
âIf youâre the Mage Tower Masterâs secretary, you must have achieved quite a lot.â
âAh, yesâŚâ
He looked me over from head to toe.
âTsk tsk. It seems youâve been building your career but neglected your appearance entirely.â
âAh, yesâŚâ
âWell. I focus more on inner qualities than outward looks, so itâs fine. If youâve reached the Mage Tower Masterâs secretary, you can probably teach magic to our child well. That saves on tutor fees⌠hmm. That counts as a pass.â
He muttered to himself while scribbling on paperâlikely scoring me.
Clearly, he wasnât just there to claim subsidies. He was sincerely looking for a bride.
Judging by his manner, Iâd never survive 100 rounds.
I closed my eyes tightly and sighed.
âTime, please pass quicklyâŚâ
[Damned bald man! How dare you judge our benefactor so rudely! Should I show him how feisty we are?]
âCalm down, Pipi. Too soon for a scene.â
I hadnât lost hope yet. Itâs too early to give upâthere were still many men left.
Time passed, and it was time for the next candidate.
The bald man stood.
âAhem, Freesia? Youâve passed my preliminary round. The other women will take their turns, so donât lose hope and wait patiently.â
âAh⌠yesâŚâ
Phew! Finally free from the first man.
âThe next man will be better. Better⌠right?â
I prayed he wouldnât be like the last one. Forget itâno bad thoughts.
I closed my eyes to gather strength, when someone plopped down in front of me.
A faint scent of a forest breeze brushed my nose.
Fresh⌠yet familiarâŚ
I opened my eyes and froze.
âHello, newcomer.â
Am I dreaming? Why is he here?
âD-Duke.â
âHere to marry?â
A tall man perched on the chair with a delinquent-like casual posture. Even that mischievous attitude somehow suited him perfectly.
Kaien Kreutz was sitting before me.
âWhat? What is happening?â
Not only was I startled by my superiorâs sudden appearance, but his expression looked⌠displeased.
Cold sweat ran down my spine.
âDid I forget to request leave? No! I did submit it!â
âWell⌠yes. I came here to marry, technicallyâŚâ
My foolish, stammering words met his golden eyes, calm and piercing.
âReally? And what should I doâŚâ
He twisted the corner of his mouth slightly.
âMy secretary must remain single for life.â
ââŚExcuse me?â
âDidnât you see the clause in the employment contract? No personal relationships that interfere with work.â
You mean⌠I canât even marry?
I stammered, bewildered.
âI didnât think that clause could be interpreted so strictlyâŚâ
âDonât. Marry.â
âExcuse me?â
âEveryone else wasnât good enough. No freedom, distracted from work.â
Kaien coldly advocated remaining unmarried.
Can he really say that in a program designed to encourage marriage?
No. Why is he even here?
Nothing made sense, and I felt like my mind had gone blank.
