IMRMH 05
Chapter 05
ââŠItâs been a while, Kwon Soo-hyuk.â
How did he even get here?
And how did he know she was on a blind date?
There were countless questions she wanted to ask him.
But even if she did, there was no guarantee heâd answer.
And even if he did, it probably wouldnât help.
He doesnât look like the kind of man who lives cleanly anyway.
Soo-hyuk carried the unmistakable aura of a lifelong predator.
Resting his chin on his hand, lazily tapping his index fingerâthere was an effortless dominance in his posture.
âYouâve been looking for me pretty desperately. Stirring things up everywhere.â
That arrogant attitudeâlike he was inviting her to try and persuade him.
âSo, why were you looking for me?â
ââŠ.â
As he already knew, Soo-hyuk was her last way out.
âEven with just a leather strap, you should be able to catch a tiger. Thatâs my daughter.â
Recalling her fatherâs words, Shin Yoo-sung lifted her head.
I can do this. Iâm Shin Byung-ohâs daughter.
The more dangerous the opponent, the more confidently she had to act.
The moment she bowed her headâit would be over.
His pitch-black eyes, devoid of emotion, tightened her chestâ
but insteadâ
âI didnât expect you to come find me in person.â
She lifted her chin even higher.
âI figured you missed me so much you came running.â
âFor someone who came running, youâre a bit late. Youâre my fourth blind date today.â
âAh, Iâm fourth?â
He raised an eyebrow and pulled his chair closer, narrowing the distance between them.
âDidnât know I had that many brothers. What a filthy bloodline.â
For a moment, Yoo-sung held her breath at how close he suddenly wasâ
but she didnât look away.
âSo? Anyone you liked? I hate sibling rivalry.â
âYes. There is.â
Her answer came without hesitation.
His expression flickered slightly.
âItâs you, Kwon Soo-hyuk.â
His lips parted just a little.
âKwon Soo-hyuk⊠do you have a girlfriend?â
âWhat if I donât?â
âThatâs a relief.â
Yoo-sung smiled, letting out a small breath.
âCongratulations. Youâve caught my interest. My standards are pretty highânone of the others were good enough.â
ââŠHa!â
Soo-hyuk let out a hollow laugh, rubbing his brow as if troubled.
This is more interesting than I expected.
âYou know my situation, right?â
âOf course I do.â
âThen if you came all the way here like this⊠I assume youâre here to help me. Am I right?â
âYouâre testing me, you little thing.â
She flinched slightlyâcaught.
But he didnât deny it.
So⊠he really was here to help.
A small spark of hope lit up inside her.
âBefore your father collapsed⊠did he tell you anything?â
ââŠIt happened suddenly. He didnât say anything special.â
âThen who was it?â
ââŠWhat?â
He slowly straightened from the table, like a beast stretching before a hunt.
âThat marriage contract. Who handed it to Kwon Hyuk-jun?â
âHow do youââ
Yoo-sung stopped herself, hiding her shock.
âTch. What a hassle.â
Soo-hyuk clicked his tongue and downed the whiskey the staff had brought.
It looked like a single sipâbut half the glass was gone in an instant.
Meeting her gaze over the rim, he wiped his lips with the back of his hand.
âYou look like youâve got a lot of questions.â
ââŠToo many. I canât even organize them.â
People around them kept glancing over.
His presence alone was enough to draw attention.
Soo-hyuk noticed too, shrugging slightly.
Not the kind of conversation for here. If I suggest going upstairs, will she hate it?
He was curious.
What kind of reaction sheâd show.
Right nowâŠ
She was like a kitten, fur bristling, hissing defensively.
Just as he opened his mouth to tease herâ
âLetâs go upstairs. Together, Kwon Soo-hyuk.â
ââŠ.â
The kitten had taken the lead.
âYou donât want to?â
Yoo-sung picked up her bag and stood.
âI wonât eat you. Just follow me.â
She even turned back and smiled.
ââŠHa.â
That was supposed to be my line.
Watching her walk off without hesitation, Soo-hyuk ran his tongue along the inside of his cheek.
âCrazy little thing.â
MeanwhileâŠ
A long, grand imperial dining table.
Dishes fit for royalty were laid out across it.
Only three people were eating.
In the heavy silenceâ
âSet the meeting date.â
The voice of Chairman Kwon Sung-jae fell across the table.
âNext Saturday. But⊠are you really not going to stop this marriage?â
He frowned deeply, clearly irritated.
âYou again?â
âOur Hyuk-jun is your only son. How can you marry him off to someone so vulgarâŠ!â
She clicked her tongue in disbelief.
A few days earlier, when Shin Kyung-hee and Oh Yoo-na visitedâ
she had tried to send them away, but Sung-jae stopped her.
âSheâs my friendâs younger sister. And his niece. Treat them properly.â
And sure enoughâ
they produced that absurd marriage contract.
âOppa⊠Iâm struggling so much since Byung-oh collapsed⊠Shinyang is practically ruined⊠canât you help me?â
Right in front of his wife, she acted coy and shamelessly asked for money.
And her husband gave her 1 billion won without hesitation.
Just thinking about it made Myung-sook furious.
Six years ago they tried to extort money using that school violence accusationâand now again?!
But the bigger issueâ
was that he fully intended to go through with the marriage.
âI canât even sleep these days. Donât you know Shin Yoo-sung seduced Hyuk-jun in high school? He suffered so much back then!â
Clang!
Sung-jae slammed his utensils down.
âEnough!â
He looked at his wife and son.
âLook at your son.â
Hyuk-jun froze.
âI even got a call from Director Jung yesterday. Not a single family is willing to accept a proposal.â
Director Jungâan elite matchmaker.
Even she rejected them.
ââŠWhat do you mean?!â
âYour son has caused too many scandals. Even as my own son, not a single marriage offer comes in for him.â
Hyuk-junâs face flushed red.
âWhy do you think the chairman allowed this marriage?â
âBecause not a single woman wants to marry you.â
The same words.
From both Yoo-sungâand his father.
His lips trembled with rage.
Seeing him, Myung-sook snapped back.
âI was already arranging his marriage! Even if he resisted, you should have stopped this!â
âRegardless⊠sheâs my old friendâs daughter.â
âAndâŠâ
He hesitated.
ââŠIt was a promise Yeojung wanted to keep.â
His late ex-wife.
When she was pregnant with Soo-hyukâ
she had made that marriage promise.
At the mention of herâ
Myung-sookâs eyes flared.
âThat gangster friend is more important than your son?! And that dead womanâs promise?!â
âWatch your mouth!â
He clutched his head.
âContinue with the marriage. No more arguments.â
And he left.
In the hallwayâ
he stopped in front of a photo.
His late wife, Im Yeo-jung.
And his âdeadâ son, Kwon Soo-hyuk.
She wore a black dress, smiling brightly.
A wedding photo.
âA black dress means youâll never belong to anyone else. Isnât it romantic?â
She had said that once.
Myung-sook had smiled secretly back then.
Not knowing your husband was already sleeping with me.
And in the endâ
the woman died.
With her son.
My victory.
ââŠYouâre still beautiful.â
At his quiet murmurâ
Myung-sook froze.
ââŠHa.â
In his eyesâ
was longing.
A look she had never received.
She trembled with rage.
And as he walked awayâ
her anger burned uncontrollably.
