Chapter 15
Just Do What Youâre Good At
Jed looked away at Ferdaâs words.
There was no doubt that when he spoke of a not-quite-loyal servant, he was referring to that girl who had been following him the whole time.
Reading the mood was his trade, so Jed could clearly perceive where the killing intent was directed.
âNo matter how I look at it, that bloodlust doesnât seem to be aimed at me, but at that guyâŠâ
It wasnât an illusion.
In fact, it was true.
Ruri was quite irritated simply because Ferda had lost money.
Compared to the total fortune of Valdrova, it wasnât a huge sum, but it also wasnât a small amount to be squandered lightly.
And even less so in Halim.
It wasnât money to be spent in a casino.
Ferda had tossed it away without hesitation.
Jed, who had no way of knowing these inner circumstances, couldnât help but be confused.
ââŠFine.â
The dagger Jed was holding spun once and disappeared into his back pocket.
âLetâs start talking. What do you want to say?â
âThis isnât a good place for a delicate conversation. Letâs go somewhere we can talk calmly.â
âFollow me.â
Jed led him to his room.
He was staying in the most expensive room of the casinoâs hotel.
Contrary to the luxury of the place, what he pulled out was a cheap rum.
âItâs the liquor I like. I donât know if itâll suit a young noble like you, but want to try some?â
Ferda shook his head.
âI donât drink alcohol.â
âA mage who doesnât drink?â
âI donât drink precisely because Iâm a mage.â
âA mage who doesnât enjoy alcoholâwhat a rare specimen.â
For mages, who spent their days thinking and focused, common escapes were women and alcohol.
And since alcohol was cheap, there were many mages who drank uncontrollably.
Ferda, on the other hand, had always needed to move forward looking only ahead, and so abstinence became a habit.
âThen how did you find out that name?â
âBy researching information.â
âAnd your source?â
Of course, it had been himself.
But saying that would serve no purpose, so Ferda dodged the question.
âEven if I told you now, it wouldnât matter. The important thing is that I know.â
âIf you just wanted to test me like that, maybe I shouldâve killed you even if it meant dying afterward.â
âIâm not testing you. I know who you are. You milked defenseless women, milked nobles, slowly accumulating money to enter high society, didnât you?â
ââŠâŠâ
âBecause to find your younger sister, Emilia, you need to climb up and gain connections in the upper class.â
Jed, an expert at keeping a straight face, stared at him.
However, his hands were trembling.
Ferdaâs words carried not even a trace of guesswork, only absolute certaintyâand that certainty hit Jedâs intentions dead on.
âImpressive. You donât seem to be using magic, but itâs like youâre reading my mindâŠâ
âItâs not hard. There was a time when I thought much like you.â
It was a fantasy Ferda had once entertained after being cast out from his family.
To become greater than House Rosnova and put them all beneath his feet.
In his naivety, he had sworn that would make them acknowledge their mistake.
âIn the end, I failed.â
Ferda wasnât accepted into the magic academy for being a bearer of the Red Circle.
Jed couldnât enter either, stained by the stigma of being the plaything of a widowed marquess.
âIâll provide you that springboard.â
âA noble brat like you?â
Young nobles.
Even if they were talented and caught attention, they usually stumbled quickly and ended up accused of high treason.
The weaker their connections, and the younger they were, the worse.
Someone like Ferda, barely an adult, was in a situation as fragile as a candle in the wind.
But Ferda wasnât an ordinary mage.
To begin with, he was the consort of the Dragon Queen.
âI suppose I should introduce myself again. My name is Ferda Valdrova.â
âValdrovaâŠ? Isnât that the name of the Red Dragon?â
Jed snorted.
âYou know that in the world of nobles, thatâs equivalent to expulsion, right? What kind of lunatic gets engaged to a Red Dragon?â
âThat lunatic is me.â
ââŠSeriously?â
Ferdaâs expression didnât change even once.
Jed scratched his head with an awkward gesture.
âDamn it. If the info was that important, it shouldâve reached my ears sooner⊠I guess losing track of time in a casino is inevitable.â
He let out that excuse and changed the subject.
âEither way, if youâre Valdrovaâs husbandâeven just a kept manâyouâve got enormous power, donât you?â
âThatâs right. Youâll be able to enter the world of high society youâve been risking your life to reach.â
Jed, who had his head lowered, slightly lifted his gaze toward Ferda.
âAnd what exactly am I supposed to do?â
Ferda extended a hand toward Ruri.
Just like with Vernell, he handed over a letter of appointment.
âWith that skill of yours, become an assistant who carries out tasks under my command.â
âWhat kind of tasks?â

âFrom minor errands to important matters. I wonât ask anything beyond your abilities.â
Jed chewed over those words and asked,
ââŠSo basically, Iâll be an errand boy?â
âAn assistant.â
âThatâs the same thing.â
âThen choose. Be an errand boy with access to high society, or stay a nobody mocked by everyone, unable to reach anything.â
ââŠâŠâ
He said it unpleasantly, but he wasnât wrong.
Becoming a despised con artist or a hardworking assistant with a real position, even if tough.
Jed weighed his options.
âIf I refuse, will you turn me in?â
Ferda tilted his head.
âWhat would I gain by turning you in?â
âYouâre a mage. Iâm from the Red-Eyed race. And that race shouldnât exist anymore. Looks like youâd benefit.â
A bloodline that, by birth, possessed the ability to nullify magic.
Like cats and mice, they were natural enemies.
âNo matter how I think about it, I wouldnât get anything out of it.â
âIâve heard that when our bloodline was wiped out, mages celebrated for three days and three nights. Didnât you?â
âStupid question. Fearing the Red-Eyed race because magic doesnât work on them is like hiding under the sheets scared of ghosts. Thatâs unworthy of a mage.â
An answer arrogant to the extreme.
But, strangely, it didnât feel unpleasant to Jed.
âWhat a strange guy.â
At that age, someone like him would normally rely on his status or overestimate his own potential.
But Ferda didnât give off any of that.
âAt first glance, heâs just a kid barely grown upâŠâ
But he acted like a noble of high rank with a solid position.
âMaybe he really can give me what I wantâŠâ
Even Jed, who didnât trust anyone, began to waver.
âDamn it.â
Jed scratched his head hard.
âSo this is what it feels like to make a deal with the devil? Itâs unsettling, but temptingâand that pisses me off.â
He tapped the letter of appointment with his fingers.
âFine. I accept, noble lord. But I have conditions. Thatâs acceptable, right?â
âTell me. Iâll write them down right now.â
Ferda pulled the pen from his breast pocket.
Jed raised two fingers.
âFirst, depending on the mission, youâll have to pay a fair amount. In the end, I need money to do my job.â
âOf course. There will be compensation.â
âSecond, if I ever feel like youâre just trying to use me or throw me away, Iâll leave without hesitation. Is that okay?â
âThatâs fine. I have no intention of deceiving you. Is that all?â
âYes, for now.â
Just do what youâre best at.
In truth, Jed wanted to add one more point to the conditions.
A contract that would only last until he found his younger sister.
âThat could become an unnecessary shackle that would just waste time.â
Thatâs why Jed decided to leave it at just those two conditions.
âSince weâre on the topic, Iâll add one more thing.â
Ferda took the pen and wrote an extra line in the blank space of the letter of appointment.
âOur contract will last until you find your sister.â
Jed lifted his head, surprised.
ââŠAre you really okay with that?â
âWhen you find your sister, everything will be over. After that, itâs your choice.â
A tone and conditions that were impeccably clean.
Seeing that he didnât show even a speck of greed, Jed was stunned.
He had even set a time limit on his own, something Jed had deliberately avoided mentioning.
âWhat the hell is this guyâŠ?â
Jedâs doubts about Ferda only grew stronger.
He had a calmness that made it feel like, no matter how others flailed, everything remained in the palm of his hand.
He had the kind of qualities only true nobles, seasoned in a thousand political battles, could possess.
âThe fact that he knows about Emilia bothers meâŠâ
But at the same time, he was the only one who knewâand could help.
Beyond his abilities, his position was trustworthy enough.
For now, Jed had no choice but to rely on him.
âAlright, I get it. No⊠I understand, sir.â
Now that heâd become an employee, he used respectful speech.
And so, all conditions were set.
The reason Ferda set that deadline was simple.
âForcing someone to stay never leads to anything good.â
He desperately needed his abilities as a subordinate, but he had no intention of keeping him by force or turning him into a slave.
And even if he tried, he couldnât.
Jed was a legendary thief who had escaped infamous prisons again and again.
âAnd besides, finding her isnât everything.â
As he watched Jed tuck the letter of appointment into his pocket, Ferda spoke.
âThen, Iâll assign you a mission right away.â
âAlready?â
âI want to take on a request using the money you took.â
âIsnât that the money I won?â
âIt was originally the money I was going to use to hire you. Didnât I say Iâd tell you if I planned to back out? Thinking of it as a job benefits us both.â
âWell, having the first job be kind of free doesnât sound so bad. So, whatâs the order?â
âFor you, itâll be extremely simple.â
Ferda pointed to one of the names Ruri held.
â Echidna Philiaz
âJust do what youâre good at.â

Once the matter was settled, Ferdaâs carriage left Halim in a hurry.
Unlike with Vernell, this time Jed also joined the journey.
âAs expected of the carriage of the Dragon Queenâs future consortâitâs incredibly comfortable. The interior is spacious, and even if the road is rough, you barely feel it.â
ââŠâ
âAnd on top of that, a cute, petite maid.â
Jed smiled and changed the topic smoothly.
He leaned in and placed his hand near the seat where she was sitting.
It was a natural playboy move.
âI donât think weâve been formally introduced. May I know your name, Miss Maid?â
âIâll be happy to explain.â
In response to the question about her identity, Ruri answered with Dragon Fear.
âUgh!â
Jed, who had been trying to flirt, recoiled instantly and clutched his chest.
Even as a Red-Eyed, he was still human and felt fear toward dragons.
âUgh⊠i-is this⊠a-a dragon?â
âSheâs a dragonspawn. The personal assistant of Dragon Queen Valdrova.â
ââŠBut dragonspawn arenât supposed to emit Dragon Fear, and she doesnât have horns or a tail.â
âThat just means sheâs an exceptionally powerful dragonspawn.â
âI thought at most she was a half-elf or a halflingâŠâ
Jed suddenly remembered the moment he had threatened Ferda with a dagger.
If he had really attacked back then, there wouldnât be a trace of him left now.
He patted his shirt, wiping away the cold sweat.
Ruri looked at him like he was pathetic and calmly sat down again.
âDonât worry. Even if sheâs violent, give her something to eat and she turns docile.â
âWho are you calling docile?â
Hearing Ruriâs retort, Ferda nodded.
âItâs true. More than docile, youâre like a dog.â
âEh? Are you insulting me again?â
âItâs a compliment. Thereâs a breed of dog called a Chihuahuaâsmall but brave. I think youâre like that.â
âCan I please punch him just once?â
âNo. Iâd rather avoid pain.â
Ferda kept provoking her, and Ruri was growing more and more irritated.
If a regular person had taken that Dragon Fear head-on, theyâd already be suffocating.
But Ferda remained completely calm, and the only one caught between them was Jed, who said:
âIâll⊠go talk to the driver. Call me if you need me.â
More than seat comfort, peace of mind was more important.
***
To find Echidna Philiaz, Ferda entered a deep forest.
They advanced to a point no longer accessible by carriage.
âThey say we canât go any further. The path is too narrow.â
âThen weâll go on foot.â
âItâs quite a distance, but not too steep. Think of it as a stroll.â
With no choice, Ferda got down and walked with Ruri and Jed behind him.
The two following him walked like it was a casual stroll, but Ferda was drenched in sweat.
âMaybe you should train your stamina a bit?â
âOddly enough, this is my limit.â
âIf you push a little more, wouldnât your endurance improve?â
âMy family was a knight house, and thanks to this, I became the Dragon Queenâs fiancĂ©.â
âAh, that explains itâŠâ
Jed scratched his cheek awkwardly.
âWant me to carry you?â
âIâll pass.â
Even if it was hard, Ferda didnât want to slow down and pushed forward with sheer willpower.
Finally, a lone house appeared deep in the forest.
âThere it is.â
âFor a witchâs house, the sinister aura is impressive.â
âAnd now itâs also a place youâll enter.â
âI know. Ahem⊠alright!â
Jed stretched and prepared for the mission.
âMan, seducing a witch for the first mission feels like sticking my head in a tigerâs mouth.â
âYou donât have to try so hard. Just show that face.â
âAre you saying Iâd be dead without this face?â
Ferda stared and replied.
âWithout that face, you might end up dead.â
âHa⊠still underestimating me. Fine, just watch.â
Jed slicked his hair back with both hands, adjusting his look.
He switched into full playboy mode and headed toward the witchâs house.
âEchidna Philiazâwhat kind of woman is she?â
When Jed had gone a bit ahead, Ruri asked.
âA witch.â
âI know that. Theyâre a bloodline that becomes one through rituals and call each other sisters, right? Thatâs why when they become witches, they receive the surname Philiaz.â
âThatâs right. You know quite a lot. Here, have a candy.â
âDo you think Iâm a child?â
Even as she said that, Ruri took the candy and rolled it in her mouth.
âWhat I mean is, why insist on bringing in a witch?â
Bringing in a witch was a dangerous act.
Even more so when it was someone with the surname Philiaz.
Only women with magical talent and who bore the Red Circle could become witches.
The Red Circle formed from intense emotions.
And in most cases, when a woman awakened the Red Circle, it was born from resentment toward a husband or obsession over a child.
In other words, witches were mostly people who harbored extreme hatred and rejection toward men.
âThatâs why people say witches are impossible to deal with and extremely selfish.â
âThatâs true.â
âThen if Echidna Philiaz was considered a heretic even among them, is she like Vernell?â
Vernell.
âMore than Vernell, Iâd say sheâs like my fiancĂ©e.â
âComparing a witch to my lady is disrespectful. Donât say such things.â
âI just said theyâre similar.â
Ruri growled, glaring at him.
No matter how she looked, she really did resemble a dog.
âDonât worry. Itâs precisely because Echidna was labeled a heretic within Philiaz that we can recruit her.â
âBecause of that?â
Before she could ask further, Jed came out of the witchâs house.
Not even three minutes had passed since he went in.
Jed came back scratching his head, looking awkward.
âUhâŠâ
Particulars of Echidna Philiaz.
âAs soon as she saw me, she said sheâd accept anything unconditionally. Is that okay?â
A serious sucker for handsome faces.
